Children Need Experiences

Let me start by saying I have been a parent for 18 years and so much has changed in that short time. I have also been teaching for 22 years and have witnessed many changes in the way we choose to raise our children.  With these changes also came huge advances in technology for families. We have also become a culture of convenience. So what does this all mean? As a 45 year old each advancement was and is new and exciting to me.  I love being able to DVR my favorite shows or binge watch a series on a Friday night.  I love being able to put away the cookbooks and use my Ipad to look up recipes.  The big clunky phone book has been recycled and replaced with google.  I love texting and Facetime, but I also remember the days before all this new technology gave me instant gratification.  My oldest child seems to be of the age where, although smart phones, apple music etc. were new, they quickly became part of his culture. Setting Up Successful Play Spaces In Your Home

UPDATE: Now that we are home for an extended period of time with our families, setting up spaces for our children to play or work can be very important to the family enviroment.  Our children need a safe place to work and play independently.  Make sure to limit choices available and rotate items when interest decreases.  Having all their toys available can be overwhelming and lead them to not be able to choose a toy to play with and look to you to play with them.  Allowing them to expore and play independently will create confidence, increase attention span and allow them to rely less on others to "play" with them.  Of course interacting and playing with your young children is important, however, encouraging self direction and independence are useful skills that are utilized throughout life. Terrible Twos at Three!

I always heard of the "Terrible Twos" and believed in them until my oldest child turned 3!  I thought the worst was over with the temper tantrums, crying because his granola bar broke in half and much much more but was I wrong.  I learned pretty quick that with 3 brought on a whole new set of behavioral issues and he was able to communicate them to me.  At three he started to negotiate and reason with me about his behavior.  He tried yelling at me, stomping away, slamming doors, throwing toys, oh the list goes on and on.  I realized quickly that his world was changing everyday and he was trying to figure it out.  I was told he was a "perfect" kid at preschool ( I was home that year pregnant with my 2nd child ) but I soon realized it was a Jekyll and Hyde situation.  The moment he got home he lost control.
