Children Need Experiences

Let me start by saying I have been a parent for 18 years and so much has changed in that short time. I have also been teaching for 22 years and have witnessed many changes in the way we choose to raise our children.  With these changes also came huge advances in technology for families. We have also become a culture of convenience. So what does this all mean? Don't "Create" Summertime Memories!

Lets face it many of this have this notion that summertime must be filled with trips, BBQ's, daily organized events, camps etc in order to create wonderful memories for our children.  Take a minute and think back to your childhood at 3, 4 or 5 years old or even 6, 7 or 8.  What do you remember most? My husband remembers, playing outside and eating corn on the cob at the picnic table in the back yard.  I remember running around the yard in the rain and wading in the creek at my Nana's house.  Simple, sponatneous, and unscripted memories.  Memories that make us smile and remember simpler times.  i think we turned out OK! Setting Up Successful Play Spaces In Your Home

UPDATE: Now that we are home for an extended period of time with our families, setting up spaces for our children to play or work can be very important to the family enviroment.  Our children need a safe place to work and play independently.  Make sure to limit choices available and rotate items when interest decreases.  Having all their toys available can be overwhelming and lead them to not be able to choose a toy to play with and look to you to play with them.  Allowing them to expore and play independently will create confidence, increase attention span and allow them to rely less on others to "play" with them.  Of course interacting and playing with your young children is important, however, encouraging self direction and independence are useful skills that are utilized throughout life.
